Energy Assistance Programs

In many states, not being able to pay to heat or weatherize your home can be a real problem, especially during the winter months. To help low-income individuals and families stay warm during the cold winter months and cool during the hot summers, the federal government provides money to the states to help pay for energy expenses.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

This program assists households with low-income with their energy costs for heating and cooling your homes. Each state manages their LIHEAP on a state-by-state basis and some states will also allow you to weatherize your home under this program.

To be eligible for this energy assistance program, your household annual income before taxes must not exceed a certain level based on the number of people that live in the household. The following list is the annual income limit before taxes under which you are able to receive energy assistance based on the number of people living in the household.

1 person in the household the limit is $16,245

2 people in the household the limit is $21,855

3 people in the household the limit is $27,465

4 people in the household the limit is $33,075

5 people in the household the limit is $38,685

6 people in the household the limit is $44,295

7 people in the household the limit is $49,905

8 people in the household the limit is $55,515

More than 8 people in the household is $61,125 and add $5,610 for each additional person.

Weatherization Assistance Program for Low-Income Persons

This program is the nation's largest residential energy efficiency program designed to help low-income homes with weatherizing. This is a federal grant program provided to the states to aid people that are unable to afford higher utility costs.

The main requirement to qualify for the weatherization program is your level of income. In most states if your income falls below 150 percent of the poverty level. For some states like Alaska and Hawaii, the minimum income level will be slightly higher.
